How to clean a diamond engagement ring

Diamond engagement rings look their best when sparkling

Various factors can dull or otherwise affect your diamond, from cosmetics to perfume and toiletries; however, a simple home solution can bring your diamond engagement ring back to its best. Mixing warm water with washing up liquid is one of the most effective ways to clean your diamonds. Leave the ring to soak for around 30 minutes, use a soft, clean toothbrush to gently scrub the stone, and follow this with a rinse under the warm tap. This can be repeated if necessary.

Other products you can use to clean your diamond engagement ring include body wash and shampoo, providing they are non-moisturising. Moisturising products can leave a filmy surface on the top of the ring, which is not what you want.

When drying diamond engagement rings, it is best to use a soft cotton cloth rather than scratchy paper towels; alternatively, allow the ring to dry naturally.

For optimum results

Rings should be cleaned weekly, which will prevent a build-up of things such as certain oils and dirt. It is recommended that rings are taken to the jewellers twice per year or more frequently if your ring has been exposed to a higher level of dust or dirt, such as through outdoor pursuits. Jewellers will use professional cleaning products that will safely restore the shine.

Improper care can cause damage to your ring. It is advised that household products, such as acetone or bleach, are never used to clean it, as the chemicals they contain are too harsh for the composition of the ring.

Products that are abrasive should also be avoided, as they can scratch metals – especially gold. Ultrasonic cleaners should also be avoided, as they use a vigorous cleaning process that can loosen stones, which may then fall out or become lost. Instead these large ultrasonic cleaner machines should be used for more robust items.
