Is your hallway full of shoes, bags, scooters and other stuff? Your hallway is probably the hardest working room in the house, but we don’t tend to show this neglected space too much love. Here are some great tips for creating a hard working and welcoming space for all the family.
Light it up
Paint the walls a light colour and use some good strong lighting to brighten everything up. Mirrors are great in hallways to bounce light around, and for a last check before you leave the house.
Make the Most of the Understairs Cupboard
This can obviously be used for coats and general storage, but there are some very funky ways you can use the space under the stairs if your budget or DIY skills allow. Pull out storage really maximises the space but doesn’t come cheap. Otherwise add some clearly labelled storage boxes for all those odds and ends that can clutter your hallway.
Family Friendly Flooring
The top choice for a family friendly hallway is laminate. It’s easy to care for, hard wearing and can stand up to the wear and tear of a busy family, as well as being cost effective too. Oak laminate flooring is a classic choice and a supplier like Wood Floor Warehouse will have a wide range of choice to help you achieve the right look.
Add Clever Storage
A cupboard for coats is perfect but a coat rack can be useful. If you don’t have the space, source the funkiest coat hooks you can and make sure they’re at heights to suit all the family. There’s usually not a huge amount of space in a hallway, so make sure the storage you have does double duty – for example, a storage chest for shoes could have a padded top to act as a bench. Building shelving around doors can look amazing, too. Just make sure you measure carefully before you buy, to make sure that console table you have your heart set on really does fit!
Get Organised
A hallway is a great space to get everyone organised. A key hook or locker for security is essential for everyone’s keys. Best of all, add some kind of an organiser – a chalkboard works really well for leaving messages, reminders and schedules to keep everyone organised and on track!
