Popular Cosmetic Procedures

Plastic surgery is used to correct a range of issues and is not always purely cosmetic in nature. For many people, alongside the many physical benefits, the psychological benefits of undergoing cosmetic procedures also prove extremely significant.  No longer are we simply choosing to simply go out and get our teeth straightened or whitened by general dentistry practicions like http://www.sjrdental.co.uk a leicester based dentist but more and more time is being spent having something shifted, moved or more!
According to figures provided by the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS), over 50,000 procedures were carried out in 2013. And it is not only women who are choosing to go under the knife. Cosmetic surgery is increasing in popularity for men too.

Although figures for 2014 dropped slightly, cosmetic procedures continue to be very popular. Some of the most common procedures include the following.

Eyelid Surgery

Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, involves the removal of excess skin and/or fat from around the eyes. The result is a fresher, more alert look, and it also typically reduces swelling in the mornings.

Face/Neck Lift

A great option for those concerned about facial sagging, this procedure work best for those with a well-defined bone structure, as well as some remaining elasticity in their skin. Facelifts are generally very successful for people in their 40s, 50s and 60s. The outcome is a younger, more vibrant look which can significantly increase the morale of the patient.

Breast Reduction or Augmentation

A breast reduction involves the removal of excess breast skin and fat. At the same time, the surgeon will usually reshape the breast, repositioning the nipple to suit the smaller size. A breast reduction is the solution to many problems, including back and neck pain. Sometimes breast reduction is used to correct breast asymmetry.

During a breast augmentation, implants are inserted behind the muscle or under existing breast tissue. The surgeon will decide whether to make incision under the armpit, across the inframammary fold or around the areola.

Rhinoplasty

One of the most common procedures, rhinoplasty may involve increasing or decreasing the size of the nose. The shape of the nostrils, bridge and or the tip can be altered at the same time. The surgeon may also be able to change the angle between the upper lip and the nose to create a more pleasing profile. If the patient has been suffering breathing difficulties, these can also be corrected.

Abdominoplasty

Patients with excess fat or skin around the abdomen due to pregnancy or significant weight loss may find this procedure worthwhile. The excess fat is removed, and the skin is pulled tight down to the public level and sutured. The procedure generally results in a scar along the abdominal wall just below the pubic hair that can be easily hidden. If necessary, the cosmetic surgeon can also repair any hernias or muscle looseness within the abdominal wall.

Liposuction

Liposuction is perfect for those who are generally happy with their figure but have a difficult area of localised fat. Such pockets of fat can be permanently removed. A small incision is made and a metal tube inserted. A vacuum pump will then draw the fat out of the area, leaving nerves and small vessels intact. Following the operation, there is likely to be some bruising and swelling, but fantastic results are generally obvious within six months of the procedure.
