How to dress for the office

Office dress codes have changed dramatically in recent years, often becoming more casual in response to changing working patterns and generational expectations. But sometimes this lack of clarity can make it really hard to know what to wear to work, especially if you’re new.

How can you ‘dress for the position you want’, in an office where the dress code is casual? How do you know what’s acceptable at a new job? From jeans at work to sheer plus size tights for a professional finish, let’s take a closer look.

Ask in advance

It’s perfectly acceptable to ask the question about dress code before you start a new job or work in a new office. Ask your manager or your HR department, and they will probably be impressed that you did! It’s a common and natural question that shows your desire to be professional.

Look around you

Attending an interview? Look at people passing and working in the office to see what they are wearing. This will give you some serious clues about the workplace attire and culture.

Think about the industry

Going to work in a law firm? Bring out that skirt suit, accessorise discreetly, find great shoes, and for plus size tights click here. Working in a digital agency? You will probably find baggy jeans and t-shirts among the back-end devs, and possibly jeans and a smart shirt for the client-facing roles. But again, just ask! Another great way to find out more is to look at the company website, as their imagery will usually give you a sense of how everyone turns out.

How to feel great at work

Regardless of the actual office dress code, it’s important that you feel confident and comfortable in what you choose to wear. Make sure your clothes fit and choose fabrics that are natural and breathable, as these will keep you comfortable. Bring an extra layer in case the air conditioning is freezing, and wear shoes you can walk in, or pack your trainers for the commute.

If you’re unsure, dress up a little – it always looks good.
