Items you should never flush down the toilet

We are very lucky in the western world to have extremely sanitary and hygienic wastewater systems. We are able to have our wastewater and waste products removed from our homes quickly and easily thanks to the drain and sewer systems that we have developed over the years. The systems that we have are built on the principles of earlier systems that were seen in ancient Rome and in civilisations even further back than this. Technology has also developed to allow us to use Sewer Pipe Lining Solihull companies like www.wilkinson-env.co.uk/sewer-repairs-drain-lining-concrete-cutting/drain-repairs/drain-repairs-solihull/ to repair damaged sewers in a quick and easy way.

Sometimes damage can be caused in drains and sewers as a result of blockages that are caused by the things we flush down our toilets. Here are some of the items that you should never flush away.

Sanitary products – these types of products cannot be flushed away. When they are submerged in water they increase in size and volume, and this can cause blockages in the system. When they become blocked, they then start to rot and, in some cases, can emit a gas that then causes further problems in the system.

Nappies – these can cause the same problems as sanitary products but on a much larger scale. Nappies are designed to hold large amounts of liquid and when they do so they increase in size. A nappy can block an entire pipe when it becomes lodged in the system.

Toilet wipes – if you like to use toilet wipes it is important to check whether the ones you purchase can be flushed away as in many cases they actually need to be disposed of in the general waste. They are often made of thicker items than toilet paper and this again can cause issues and blockages.

Large amounts of toilet paper – although toilet paper can be flushed away if you have large amounts of it in the toilet when you flush you might find that it clogs in the pipes. It is much better to flush away smaller amounts where possible, even if this means flushing the toilet a couple of times.

These are just a few of the items that you need to either avoid flushing away or flush away in small amounts.
