Three unmissable attractions in and around Bristol

Bristol and its surrounding area is home to some outstanding attractions. Here are three of the best.

National Arboretum at Westonbirt

On a bright day, the National Arboretum at Westonbirt is unmissable. Operated by the Forestry Commission, this huge 600-acre space houses over 15,000 specimens, including 3,000 different types of tree. Not only is it a place of historical and environmental significance
but its Victorian creator also collected important specimens from around the world. The best time to visit is the autumn, when you will see a wonderful display of coloured leaves.

Bristol Museum & Art Gallery

If the weather is poor, why not head to Bristol Museum & Art Gallery for a great day of culture? You will find 19 galleries and exhibitions spread over three floors, covering topics from the beginning of time right through to today. The exhibitions include many wonders of the natural world and plenty of excellent geology, natural history and archaeology exhibits. The art collection is world class and everything is set inside a very attractive Edwardian building. Don’t forget to stop at the shop and cafe for souvenirs and refreshments. You will find the museum on Park Street and you might also want to check out Bristol Science Centre, which has plenty of interactive exhibits.

Avon Valley Adventure and Wildlife Park

Get the children outdoors at the Avon Valley Adventure and Wildlife Park, which boasts a fantastic collection of animals including pigs, Shetland ponies, donkeys, goats and Highland cattle. There is also a riverside walk, tractor rides, outdoor play areas, trains, and a large indoor play barn with a dedicated toddler play area. There is also a year-round schedule of talks, demonstrations, animal handling and even pig racing. With 80 acres of park to explore, there will be plenty to discover.
